Most of iron is used for synthesis of blood hemoglobin found in red blood cells. The main task of red blood cells is to carry oxygen from lungs to the tissues and this will not happen if there is not enough iron. Generally, iron is involved in preventing anemia, improving appetite and increasing energy and liveliness of the body. Deficiency of this element shows up with symptoms such as fatigue, respiratory problems, decreased physical activity and learning problems in children.
More group B vitamins are involved in blood production and carry this out with their effect on synthesis of hemoglobin or red blood cells. For example, folic acid and B12 are involved in the synthesis of red blood cells. Vitamin B6 is involved in the synthesis of porphyrin, an essential part of hemoglobin molecule. This vitamin is involved in the action of aminotransferase enzyme in red blood cells. Vitamin C and copper also increase the absorption of iron from the digestive tract.
